  2.                          WHAT TO USE AS PLANTERS

  4.               To prepare in advance for your adventure in
  5.           mini-horticulture, think first about containers -- or
  6.           planters.  Tin cans, milk cartons, and egg cartons make
  7.           suitable planters.  The rule is, all these containers
  8.           should be carefully washed, using a little bleach in the
  9.           water, and well rinsed.  Egg shells can be used as planters
  10.           for certain small plants.  Crush the eggshell slightly, so
  11.           the roots can grow through the cracks, and when
  12.           transplanting time comes, just transplant shell and all
  13.           into the new planter.  Cardboard cartons can be treated the
  14.           same as egg shells.

  16.               Even fruit rinds, such as those from oranges and
  17.           grapefruit, can be made into mini-planters.  First scrape
  18.           the inside of a half-rind as clean of pulp as possible, and
  19.           then punch drainage holes.  Punch these holes while the
  20.           rind is still tender, because the next step is to put the
  21.           rind aside to dry-cure.  When they are thoroughly cured,
  22.           they will be almost as tough as leather, and ready for use.
